Affordable Housing

There are several opportunities for senior citizens to obtain financial assistance for their housing needs.

Subsidized independent housing

Some developers put together a funding package that will allow them to rent some or all of their units below the market rental rate. Most have a sliding scale that they use that is based on the residents' income. There may be age and income eligibility requirements for this housing. There may be a waiting list for units in these facilities.

HUD subsidized facilities

The Department of Housing and Urban Development provides loans to housing developers building public housing. There is a resident income requirement for eligibility. These buildings are generally for seniors and disabled adults. There may be a waiting list for these facilities.

Housing Choice Vouchers (formerly Section 8 Vouchers

The Department of Housing and Urban Development allocates a certain number of Housing Choice Vouchers available to specific geographic areas. There is an income eligibility for voucher applicants. The vouchers may be used for the rental units of approved landlords. Contact your local housing authority to find out what agency in your area distributes housing Choice Vouchers. When contacted the agency will tell you if there is a waiting list and when the application process will open for the vouchers.

Supportive Living Facility

In Illinois supportive living facilities are similar to assisted living facilities but they are able to accept Medicaid payment for care services. Residents of supportive living facilities will have their own apartment with bath and kitchenette. The facility staff will offer 3 meals and snacks each day, assist with personal care, such as bathing and grooming, medication management, laundry, housekeeping and transportation. In Illinois supportive living facilities are required to be "certified" by the Illinois Department of Human Services-Public Aid.
