Holiday Meals on Wheels

Hunger takes NO holiday!

Do YOU expect to eat 7 days a week?  Many elders cannot.

Holiday Meals on Wheels fills the gap to provide our vulnerable and nutritionally at-risk elders with the most basic of human needs, one nutritious meal a day, every day!

What is Food Insecurity?

Problems with the availability, accessibility and utilization of food.

Food insecurity among low-income elders (age 60 and up) is a special concern since they may have unique nutritional needs and may require special diets for medical conditions.

Why Holiday Meals on Wheels…

  • Due to increasing demand and insufficient funding, the publicly funded meals program is limited to only one hot meal per day, Monday thru Friday.
  • NO meals are provided on weekends, let alone holidays under the publicly funded program.
  • Many elders must choose between food, medicine, utilities, and other necessities of living!

2007 Holiday & Weekend Meals – Record Breaking Number...

While 24,532 nutritious meals delivered to “food insecure” seniors in eight counties was record breaking, it only met 23% of the total client need.

YOU can make a difference!

Events like the Celebrity Chefs Brunch, Cookbook and the Senior Lifestyle Expo strive to increase funding and the capacity of this program to serve more elders.

Please help us raise the awareness of this important cause.

“Our family is very appreciative of the services provided in this program. Not only does my dad receive a hot meal for lunch every weekday, but has the added benefit of friendly, consistent delivery volunteers. I know this service really adds to his well being.”

“I like getting the meals because I have trouble standing long enough to cook and if I had to do it everyday I couldn’t. We are thankful it’s available.”

Lily, New Lenox    Age: 94
