Rising costs for food, medications, housing, utilities, and health care continue to impact many older adults, especially those living on fixed incomes. Recently Illinois made updates to public benefit programs, property tax, and energy relief programs. Here’s what you need to know.
From April 13–17, 2026, the National Council on Aging (NCOA) and partners nationwide will recognize Boost Your Budget Week, an annual campaign that helps older adults, caregivers, and service providers explore public and private benefits that support financial stability, health, and independence. The campaign connects people to education, benefits screening, and local enrollment assistance.
Raising Awareness & Access
Public benefit programs can make a meaningful difference for older adults living on fixed or limited incomes. Programs such as SNAP, Medicaid, Medicare Savings Programs, LIHEAP, and Medicare Part D Extra Help can reduce monthly expenses and help boost household budgets by thousands of dollars each year.
Yet many people who qualify are not enrolled. Limited awareness, changing eligibility rules, and complex application processes often stand in the way. AgeGuide and its community partners help reduce these barriers by offering clear information and one-on-one benefits assistance.
Do You Qualify For Benefits?
NCOA’s BenefitsCheckUp Tool is a free, confidential online tool that screens for benefits in minutes, including:
- Prescription drugs and medical assistance
- Groceries and meal programs
- Utility and energy assistance
- Property tax relief and housing stability
- Transportation and in-home‑support
Give it a try! You may be surprised by what you qualify for.
Important Illinois Updates for 2026
In Illinois, new SNAP work reporting requirements took effect in 2026 and will impact many Illinois residents, especially those aged 55–64. At the same time, expanded senior property tax deferral rules now allow more homeowners age 65 and older to qualify due to higher income limits. The Illinois LIHEAP program, which helps low-income residents with utility bills, remains open through August 15, 2026, or until funds are exhausted, with new utility discount programs becoming available statewide.
