October is recognized as Residents’ Rights Month, a time dedicated to honoring and raising awareness about the dignity, respect, and rights of individuals living in long-term care facilities. The National Consumer Voice for Quality Long-Term Care, an organization dedicated to being the leading national voice representing consumers in issues related to long-term care, established this month. This observance highlights the importance of ensuring that residents are treated with respect, have the autonomy to make decisions about their care, and are included in shaping policies that affect their daily lives.

Residents have the right to self-determination and to use their voice to make their own choices. This year’s Residents’ Rights Month theme, The Power of My Voice, emphasizes self-empowerment and recognizes the power of residents being vocal about their interests, personal growth, and right to live full, enriching lives. “Residents’ voices are the most important at the decision-making table. This year’s Residents’ Rights Month theme empowers residents to raise their voices to express their likes and dislikes and fervently pursue the life they want to live,” said Lori Smetanka, Executive Director of Consumer Voice.

Residents’ Rights Month serves as a reminder that older adults and those in long-term care facilities should not be overlooked. By upholding their rights, we create communities that value compassion, respect, and human dignity.
