On June 15, communities across the globe recognized World Elder Abuse Awareness Day (WEAAD)—a powerful reminder that we must protect older adults from abuse, neglect, and exploitation. But awareness doesn’t stop with a single day.

At AgeGuide, we believe that every day is an opportunity to stand up for the dignity, rights, and safety of older adults. Elder abuse can take many forms—physical, emotional, financial, sexual, or neglect—and it often goes unreported. That’s why continued education, vigilance, and community support are essential.

Older American Act services provide awareness, resources, and support to those who may be at risk. Programs like the Long-Term Care Ombudsman, Caregiver Support, and Legal Assistance Services are available to help ensure older adults live safe, connected, and respected lives.

What You Can Do:

  • Check in with older adults in your life—connection helps prevent isolation, a major risk factor for abuse.
  • Know the signs: Look for sudden behavior changes, unexplained injuries, or missing money or property.
  • Report concerns: If you suspect abuse, call the Illinois Adult Protective Services Hotline at 1-866-800-1409.

Let’s keep the conversation going all month and all year to advocate for a world where all older adults are treated with the respect and care they deserve.
