Federal Appropriations Update

Advocacy works, and we’re seeing the results. After months of negotiations, federal funding for Older Americans Act (OAA) programs has been finalized through the end of the fiscal year. This progress reflects the collective efforts of aging advocates nationwide and underscores why showing up and engaging with legislators truly matters.

Last week, President Trump signed into law the remaining appropriations bills, finalizing federal funding for the rest of the fiscal year, which runs through September 30. After a long and often unpredictable FY 2026 appropriations process, Older Americans Act (OAA) programs, along with other critical aging services, are now fully funded through the end of the year.

This outcome reflects sustained advocacy from aging network partners across the country and provides stability for essential services that older adults and caregivers rely on every day. Nutrition programs, caregiver supports, in-home services, and community-based interventions funded through OAA can continue without disruption.

While OAA funding is secure for this fiscal year, the extended FY 2026 process served as a reminder of how important timely appropriations are for planning and service delivery. Lawmakers are already beginning early discussions around FY 2027 funding to help avoid similar delays. Predictable, stable funding allows states and local aging providers to plan responsibly, sustain staffing, and continue delivering meals, caregiver support, in-home services, and wellness programs without interruption. Ongoing advocacy ensures that the needs of older adults remain visible as Congress sets priorities for the years ahead.

Now is Your Chance to Get Involved

AgeGuide’s annual Advocacy Breakfast Collaboratives are a chance to make your voice heard on all of the critical aging issues.

These breakfast events give legislators a firsthand look at how OAA dollars are working in their communities, supporting older adults, strengthening caregivers, and preventing far more costly interventions down the line. Rather than talking about funding in the abstract, these events put real people, programs, and outcomes in front of decision-makers.

When legislators hear directly from us, OAA funding becomes more than a line item, it becomes a proven investment. These conversations reinforce why continued and robust funding matters and why aging services must remain a federal priority.

Upcoming Advocacy Breakfast Collaboratives

Our Advocacy Breakfast Collaboratives on April 27, May 1 (Aurora), and May 4 will include:

  • Local impact stories tied directly to OAA funding
  • Conversations with federal and state legislators
  • Networking opportunities
