The holiday season brings countless opportunities for joy and celebration, and it’s also a perfect reminder of how powerful social connection can be for our well-being. For older adults, staying engaged and connected may take extra planning and effort but it is worth the resulting health benefits, increased sense of belonging, and stronger communities. This year, some engaging national campaigns and local programs are emphasizing the value of connection.

National Campaigns Highlight the Importance of Inclusion

The new holiday ad campaign from Home Instead features Macaulay Culkin as the grown-up Kevin from the movie, Home Alone, navigating life with his aging mother. It spotlights the importance of checking in on aging loved ones and reframes the familiar holiday story as a reminder that being present, engaged, and attentive makes a real difference in the lives of older adults.

Meals on Wheels America’s Giving Tuesday message also emphasizes how community support helps ensure older adults receive both nutritious meals and connection. Their message is clear, all of us can help make sure no older adult is left hungry or disconnected this season.

Local Programs Bringing Connection to Life

Here in our region, AgeGuide and its funded partners put these messages into action every day. Get involved and make an impact on an older adult’s life today.

  • Friendly Visiting and Phone Call programs volunteers provide regular check-ins and conversations that help older adults build relationships and stay socially engaged throughout the year. These simple but impactful relationships offer comfort, joy, and a sense of belonging, which is especially welcome during the winter months.
  • Senior Nutrition Programs help ensure that older adults have access to a warm and healthy meal this season and all year long.

A Community Effort That Lasts Beyond the Season

This holiday season, and all year long, we can work together to ensure no one is left out, and everyone has a place to belong.
