September is a time to celebrate healthy aging, and the places that help make it possible. During Healthy Aging Month and National Senior Center Month, we recognize the many ways older adults can stay active, connected and engaged throughout their lives. We also celebrate senior centers and the important role they play in supporting those goals every day.
More Than a Place to Gather
Today’s senior centers are much more than meeting spaces. They are community hubs where older adults can exercise, learn something new, enjoy a meal, connect with friends, volunteer and access important programs and resources.
Whether someone joins a fitness class, attends a workshop, participates in an activity or simply stops by to spend time with others, these opportunities can support different aspects of healthy aging.
For Janice, It’s a Place to Connect and Contribute
Janice, visits Senior Services Associates every week. The center has become an important source of both practical support and social connection in her life.
“They’ve helped me with my taxes and my tax freeze. I’m legally blind, so they have transportation for me,” Janice shared. “I come here once a week to play bingo. I need to go out. I live alone. I’m 88 years old and I need to socialize – my kids insist on that.”
But Janice doesn’t just go to get support, she also goes because she likes to volunteer at the center.
When a Friendly Visiting Coordinator received several bags of donated sewing material, she knew Janice would put them to good use. Janice spent the weekend sorting through the material and sewing. She has since made tablecloths, quilts and other items that she brings to Senior Services Associates to be used as gifts or door prizes at events.
Without the program, Janice says, “I wouldn’t have a reason to sew. Now I can enjoy my hobby and give something back.”
Her story shows how senior centers can offer something that is hard to measure: a reason to get out of the house, an opportunity to contribute and a place to belong.
A Place to Connect, Grow and Thrive
For one person, healthy aging might mean staying physically active. For another, it could mean building friendships, finding reliable transportation, learning a new skill or having a reason to keep doing something they love.
This September, National Senior Center Month and Healthy Aging Month are reminders that aging doesn’t happen in isolation. It happens in communities where people have opportunities to connect, participate, and continue doing the things that give their lives meaning.
