AgeGuide is launching a new Community Corner series to highlight the people and programs making a difference in the lives of older adults throughout our region. This month, in honor of Residents’ Rights Month, we sat down with Emily from AgeGuide’s Adult Protective Services Program to learn more about her work and the importance of resident advocacy.

Making Sure Every Voice Is Heard

Emily explains that moving into a long-term care facility can mean adjusting to new routines and giving up some independence. She shared that the purpose of the Long-Term Care Ombudsman Program is to help ensure residents maintain a voice in decisions affecting their daily lives.

Through regular facility visits, Ombudsmen build relationships with residents, listen to concerns, and advocate for their rights and preferences. Whether it’s addressing issues with mealtimes, showers, or other aspects of care, the goal is to help residents feel heard and respected.

Emily said, “It kind of gives the residents their voices back.”

One of the most rewarding parts of her work is building trust with residents and knowing they feel comfortable coming forward with their concerns.

Sometimes Advocacy Means Ice Cream

One of Emily’s favorite examples of resident advocacy involved a group of long-term care residents who came together to request a 24/7 ice cream machine. Their efforts paid off, and the facility provided both the machine and a lounge where residents could gather and socialize whenever they wanted.

While it may seem like a small victory, the story highlights something much bigger: the importance of giving residents a say in the communities they call home.

Looking Ahead

Emily’s commitment to resident-directed care extends beyond AgeGuide. She was recently elected to the Board of Directors for the Illinois Pioneer Coalition, an organization dedicated to promoting culture change in long-term care facilities by prioritizing residents’ preferences and independence.

As we recognize Residents’ Rights Month, Emily’s work reminds us that advocacy is about more than resolving concerns. It’s about building relationships, empowering older adults, and ensuring every resident has a voice in how they live their life.

We’re proud to kick off our Community Spotlight series by recognizing Emily and the meaningful impact of the Ombudsman Program.
