As the weather cools down, it’s time for cozy sweaters, pumpkin spice, and falls prevention! Falls are a leading cause of injuries, hospitalizations, and worse in older adults. AgeGuide hopes to inspire and promote proactive strategies to safeguard the health and well-being of older adults.

Every year, millions of older adults suffer from falls, leading to injuries, hospitalizations, and a decline in overall health. In recognition of Falls Prevention Awareness Month, AgeGuide and its partners raise awareness of falls in hopes of inspiring and promoting proactive strategies to safeguard the health and well-being of older adults.

Services Available Through AgeGuide and Our Partners

Falls prevention programs are evidence-based, addressing medical issues, individual perceptions, aging myths, and environmental risks. They promote healthy aging and empower people to confidently manage their safety and fall risk.

AgeGuide and our community partners offer a variety of health promotion classes including:

  • A Matter of Balance
    • Teaches older adults how to reduce fall risks and ease their fear of falling, improves fall self-management, increases self-confidence, and promotes physical activity. It also helps eliminate the isolation and depression resulting from fear of falling.
  • Bingocize
    • A fun and engaging way to learn, socialize, and exercise while playing the game of bingo. This program strengthens muscles and improves balance.
  • Fit & Strong
    • Helps older adults eliminate stiffness and pain to increase activity and confidence, allowing them to live a more active lifestyle. The class provides physical activity training and health education for older adults with lower extremity osteoarthritis.
  • Tai Chi for Arthritis and Tai Ji Quan-Moving for Better Balance
    • Improves movement, balance, strength, flexibility, immunity, and relaxation while decreasing pain and falls. Tai Chi and Tai Ji Quan are one of the most recommended activities by the Mayo Clinic, Harvard Health, the Parkinson’s Foundation, and many more health experts, for the management of chronic pain by maintaining strength and flexibility.

By raising awareness and taking proactive steps, we can significantly reduce the risk of falls among older adults, allowing them to live independently and confidently for longer.
