With the recent federal government shutdown now resolved, many older adults may be wondering how it affected the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Older Americans Act. Earlier this week, President Trump signed a Continuing Resolution (CR) passed by Congress, which provides full FY26 funding for some agencies and partial funding for most others through January 30, 2026. Importantly, the CR includes full-year funding for SNAP and the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP), ensuring that older adults continue to have access to the nutritional resources that are vital to their health, safety, and well-being. Aging services will continue to be funded at last year’s levels for now, and SNAP benefits have returned to normal.
SNAP Benefits Are Back to Normal
Older adults can continue using their EBT cards as they always have. Any benefits that were briefly delayed are being added back to accounts, and no action is needed from recipients.
What This Means for Older Adults
Here are a few key points to keep in mind:
- Older Americans Act services will continue at previous funding levels.
- SNAP benefits remain secure. The program is fully funded, and benefits will continue without interruption now that the shutdown has ended.
- No changes to eligibility. Older adults do not need to reapply or take any extra steps because of the shutdown.
Overall, this is a return to normal.
