Once again, AgeGuide Northeastern Illinois has supported Race Amity Day events organized by Illinois Citizens for Race Amity. Race Amity Day is an observance dedicated to cultivating understanding, unity, and collaboration among people of all racial backgrounds. Crucially, its aspiration extends beyond mere tolerance, but aiming for genuine friendship and active cooperation. The observance is celebrated every June in communities across the state, an observance officially endorsed by Governor JB Pritzker.
On June 6th, AgeGuide Board Member, Bette Lawrence-Water, who also serves on the Advisory Board of the National Center on Race Amity in Boston, was emcee for the Naperville 2026 celebration at the Naperville Public Library, Nichols Branch. Guest speaker Van Gilmer, Choral Director of the Bahá’í House of Worship in Wilmette and a participant in the historic Woolworth’s sit-in and civil rights boycott of 1960, shared reflections on that era. He also displayed artifacts and images from this event and its contribution to the Civil Rights movement.
Now 83, Mr. Gilmer voiced his hopes for bringing people together in harmony, unity, and understanding. Participants also enjoyed readings, a film, music, refreshments, and exchanged experiences and hope for the future.
