September is Falls Prevention Awareness Month, a reminder that falls are not a normal part of aging and that there are steps we can take to reduce the risk. Falls Prevention Awareness Week, September 21–25, is another opportunity to learn about simple ways to stay safe, active and independent.

Staying active and building strength and balance can help older adults feel more confident and independent in their daily lives. AgeGuide supports several evidence-based health promotion programs designed to do just that. Programs such as A Matter of Balance help older adults reduce their fear of falling and learn strategies to lower the risk of falls, while Bingocize combines exercise, social connection and falls prevention education. Tai Chi for Arthritis focuses on improving balance, strength, flexibility and movement.

Classes are offered throughout AgeGuide’s eight-county region, with both in-person and online health workshops available. Availability varies by county.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) also offers free falls prevention resources for older adults, caregivers and professionals. Their Falls Prevention Awareness Week resources include videos, handouts, home safety information and practical tips.

This Falls Prevention Awareness Month, take a step toward staying strong and confident. Find an AgeGuide class near you, and explore NCOA’s resources for more ways to reduce your risk of falling.
