Every May, communities across the country celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM), led by the Administration for Community Living. Established in 1963, Older Americans Month recognizes the contributions of older adults, raises awareness of issues impacting aging communities, and celebrates the importance of supporting healthy aging.

This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” encourages older adults and communities to prioritize wellness, connection, and healthy aging. While health is often thought of in physical terms, strong social connections, access to community resources, and opportunities for civic engagement also play an important role in overall well-being.

Advocacy Breakfast Collaborative Series

In recognition of Older Americans Month, AgeGuide hosted a three-part Advocacy Breakfast Collaborative series in Lombard, Aurora, and virtually. These events brought together older adults, caregivers, service providers, community leaders, and elected officials for meaningful conversations about the needs of aging communities across northeastern Illinois.

More than 300 participants attended the collaborative events, including over 20 legislators and legislative staff members from throughout the region. The events created opportunities for older adults to connect directly with policymakers, share their lived experiences, and advocate for the programs and services that support healthy aging.

Connection Supports Healthy Aging

Throughout the collaborative series, participants discussed issues including nutrition services, caregiver support, transportation, social connection, and access to community-based programs. One participant, Dave, shared how his local senior center changed his life after his wife passed away. He was even able to find his new wife at the senior center!

The events reflected the spirit of this year’s Older Americans Month theme by highlighting that health is supported not only through medical care, but also through connection. Opportunities to gather and engage in advocacy can help reduce isolation and empower older adults to remain active participants in their communities.

Legislators also provided updates on legislation impacting older adults and aging services, helping strengthen relationships between policymakers and the communities they serve.

The Importance of the Older Americans Act

The programs highlighted during the collaborative series are funded through the Older Americans Act (OAA), which supports services including home-delivered meals, community dining, transportation, wellness programs, and caregiver support.

These programs help older adults stay connected, maintain independence, and support overall health and well-being. As the older adult population continues to grow, continued investment in Older Americans Act programs remains essential.

Take Action

Older Americans Month is also an opportunity to advocate for the services that help older adults age well in their communities. Community voices play a critical role in shaping the future of aging services and ensuring older adults have access to the support they need.

We encourage community members to participate in our action alert and urge policymakers to increase funding for Older Americans Act programs and community-based aging services.
